The Future in My Future
Personally, the most impactful aspect of
this course has been the opportunity it has afforded to me to explore another
form of literature that I had not delved into extensively beforehand.
Although I enjoy apocalyptic films and other media, for some reason I had not
investigated the literary aspect of the genre.
As a literature student, being introduced to new genres is the most beneficial
thing I can gain from a course and as a teacher it is incredibly important for
me to discover genres through which students may become engaged.
As a
teacher, it will be my responsibility to
match students with books and genres that help to
ignite a lifelong love
of reading and literature. Observing that
a student may have an interest in science
fiction and futuristic films or television shows would allow me to introduce
them to the literary genre. But to do so I need background knowledge about which
books to recommend and what aspects to look for in a quality piece of science
fiction. Most valuable, if I can hook a
student with this sci-fi I may then introduce them to other literature as well.
In addition to the course required texts,
I also found an excellent resource in a presentation given by one of my
classmates who introduced a science fiction comic book. I have a personal
interest in reading this comic book and would also consider recommending it to
one of my more advanced high school students.
But aside from the value of discovering this one book, it has reaffirmed my
desire to introduce and teach with elevated and intellectual graphic novels,
which I believe are undervalued with regards to creativity and their ability to
grab the attention of students.
Specifically there are several novels and short stories introduced in the
course that I would use in my high school classroom. I believe that
Parable of the Sower features a relatable main character, Lauren, for
young adults due to her questioning nature and leadership qualities. I would
also doubtlessly introduce
The Time Machine because it is
timeless and appropriate for young students. I also value the opportunity the
novel provides for intellectual thinking and discussions about the author’s
commentary on society. Lastly, I would utilize
Stone Lives for its intriguing ideas and the excitement that it
maintains which a reader looks for in futuristic literature. Ultimately, at the midpoint of this course I have gained personal benefits as a literature reader by delving into the futuristic literature field. Exploring the genre has also allowed me to add science fiction to my professional repertoire of literature that I may now utilize in my future classroom.
