Oxford English Dictionary  noun 1a Roman Hist. A member of the plebs; a commoner, as opposed to one of the privileged patricians.

2. gen. A person not of noble or privileged rank; one of the ordinary people, a commoner. Now usu. derogatory: a person of low social status, a common or vulgar person.

adj. 3 Chiefly derogatory. Having qualities or features characteristic of or attributed to the lower social classes; commonplace, undistinguished; unsophisticated, uncultured, vulgar, coarse. Also in extended use.
