The Black Aesthetic

& the Black Arts Movement

"The Black Aesthetic" was a philosophy or attitude toward art developed in the 1960s-70s by the Black Arts Movement, a loose affiliation of avant-garde African American writers, choreographers, film-makers, and other artists.

"aesthetics" = study or enhancement of beauty, pleasure (or contrarily, ugliness & pain)

The most widely remarked or unique feature of the Black Aesthetic was, "Black is Beautiful," which defied racism and the Western Civilization's "color code."
