Workshop means students cannot
“sit out” discussion on a regular basis.
Neither should students
dominate discussion.
Quality and quantity of students' participation are factored into overall
grade.
Manuscript discussions: Students should make “one
point at a time” rather than a list of issues.
Reading discussions: Each student must
participate at least occasionally by referring to contents or specific pages of
the reading assignment.
Students must
“track” discussions. Visible boredom is usually a sign that students haven’t
prepared or are incapable or unwilling to help (though bored students
usually blame their attitude on the content or the teacher, regardless of
other students' interest).
