Concept sentence:  In a kindergarten classroom, several students claim to the substitute that they are sick, but the nurse isn’t there.

Jennifer:  Mrs. Tupa will not be here this morning and I’ll be your substitute until she gets here.  My name is Mrs. Jones.   First thing we will do is the calendar.

Andrea: (Whining) Mrs. Jones, I don’t feel good.  I think I’m gonna throw up.

Jennifer:  Well, why don’t you give it a while and see how you feel, okay?  Now go sit down.

Jennifer: Okay class, today is…

Class:  Monday, April 25, 2005.

Jennifer: Good.  What will tomorrow be?

Class:  Tuesday, April 26, 2005.

Mary:  Mrs. Jones, Andrea just threw up all over the floor.

Jennifer:  Oh no!  Okay, Andrea, let me write you a pass to the nurse and I need to call the janitor.

(Writes pass and hands it to Andrea.)

Jennifer:  (On the phone.) I am in Mrs. Tupa’s class and I just had a student get sick and I need someone to come and clean it up.

(Hangs up phone and walks back to front of class.)

Jennifer:  Okay, what’s next?  Oh yeah, what does the weather look like today?

Class:  Cloudy and rainy.

Jennifer:  Okay, let me find the cards for clouds and rain.

(Daniel walks up to her.)

Daniel:  Mrs. Jones, I don’t feel very good.  I think I need to go to the nurse.

Jennifer: (Sweetly)  Daniel, maybe you should just go sit back at your desk and give it a little while.  You’ve acted like you feel fine all morning.  I’m sure you will feel better when it is time to go to P.E.

Daniel:  I really don’t feel good and one time my teacher wouldn’t send me to the nurse and my mom got really mad.  She said that if I don’t feel good then my teacher better send me to the nurse or she will call up here.

Jennifer:  Um, okay, uh, I’ll write you a pass.

(Writes him a pass and he leaves.)

Jennifer:  Okay, now what is next?

Class:  You were looking for the clouds and rain cards.

Jennifer:  That’s right.  Oh, here they are.

(Someone knocks on the door and she goes to answer it.)

Micah:  I’m here to clean up the mess.  Where is it?

Mary:  Over here beside my desk.  It really stinks bad.

(Micah cleans and then leaves the room.)

Class:  Yuck!  That stuff stinks!

(Devon walks up to her.)

Devon:  My throat hurts really bad and my nose is runny.  (Starts coughing and sniffling)  Can I go to the nurse?

Jennifer:  You don’t think you can try to make it the rest of the day?

Devon:  No.  My mom knew I wasn’t feeling good and she told me that if I didn’t feel any better she would come and get me.

Jennifer:  Okay, let me right you a pass.

(Devon leaves.)

Jennifer:  Now we are going to work on this coloring sheet your teacher left for you.  It is color by number.  One is red, two is blue, three is green, four is yellow, and five is black.  Now get out your colors.

(Jennifer passes out the sheets and notices Sherry has her head down on her desk.)

Jennifer:  Sherry, are you feeling okay?

Sherry:  No, my head really hurts and my muscles ache.

Jennifer:  Do you think you can color this sheet and wait it out a little while to see if you feel better?

Sherry:  No.  I feel really sick.

Jennifer: (Hesitant)  Okay, let me write you a pass.

(Sherry leaves. Jennifer continues to pass out papers and students are busily coloring.)

(A few minutes pass and Dr. White, the principal, walks into the room with Daniel, Devon, and Sherry.)

Dr. White: (Annoyed) Mrs. Jones, the nurse isn’t even here today.  These students are not running a temperature and seem to be fine.  Please do not send any more kids to the nurse.

Jennifer:  I’m sorry.

(Dr. White leaves.  Daniel, Devon, and Sherry all sit down and Jennifer hands them all the worksheet.)

(Tara walks over to Jennifer.)

Tara:  Mrs. Jones, I don’t feel good.  My stomach really hurts and I feel like I’m gonna throw up.

Jennifer: (Irritated) I’m sorry Tara, but I can’t send you to the nurse.  I know you’ve seemed sluggish all morning, but there is nothing I can do, the nurse isn’t here.  Now, go sit down, finish your coloring sheet, and try to tough it out.  Mrs. Tupa will be here soon.

(Tara slowly goes and sits down and all the students are quietly working on their coloring sheets.)

Mary:  Mrs. Jones?

Jennifer:  Yes, Mary?

Mary:  Tara just threw up all over the floor.

Jennifer: (Frantically)  Oh, no!  Tara, I’m so sorry!  I don’t know what to do!  They said that I can’t send anyone else to the nurse.  First, I need to call and have someone clean this up.

(Runs to the phone.)

Jennifer: (On the phone)  This is the sub for Mrs. Tupa again and I need someone to come and clean up another mess.

(Tara is still getting sick all over the floor.)

Jennifer:  I don’t know what to do!  Maybe I should send her to the nurse.  Let me call the office and ask.

(Dr. White walks in.)

Dr. White: (Fuming)  Mrs. Jones!  Can’t you see this child is sick?  Why didn’t you send her to the nurse?

Jennifer:  You told me not to.  I didn’t know what to do.  Should I send her?

Dr. White:  Yes!  Send her to the office so they can call her mom!

(Jennifer writes a pass and Tara leaves the room.)

Dr. White:  I was coming in here to tell you that Mrs. Tupa is here and that you can leave as soon as the kids go to P.E.  It’s time for them to go right now.

(Dr. White leaves.)

Jennifer:  Boys and girls, get lined up so we can go to P.E.

(Mrs. Tupa walks in)

Class:  Mrs. Tupa!  You’re back!

Mrs. Tupa:  I’m here.  I heard you’ve all had a really interesting morning.  Do ya’ll feel better now?

Sherry, Daniel, and Devon:  Yeah!

(Jennifer rolls her eyes, grabs her purse and bag, and walks out of the room.)

Mrs. Tupa:  Okay, line up and let’s go.

(Class obediently lines up and they walk out of the room.)

Theme:  You should do what you feel is right.
