David Moore 11-10-03 "Clashing
Waves" Characters:
Jason, David, Enrique, Dr. White Concept
sentence: Two
students are discussing a common interest, when they are interrupted and judged
by another student. Theme
sentence:
Being tactful and considerate while expressing one's opinion can be difficult. Jason:
(sits at desk and looks up at David, while he sits down) Hey, how’s it
going. David:
Pretty good, how about yourself? Jason:
As good as it’s going to get. David:
Did you get to the beach this weekend or what? Jason:
Yeah, man it was going off! David:
Did you just stay in Galveston? Jason:
As always. David:
How big were the waves? Jason:
Dude, they were like chest to head with good form. (Enrique
looks up and begins listening to the conversation with a smirk on his face) David:
What day were you out there because on Saturday at surfside it was choppy as
hell? Jason:
I was out there on Saturday. David:
Man, I gotta start checking out the surf cam at Galveston before I go all the
way to surfside. It seems like when there is chop at surfside there are clean
breaks in Galveston. Jason:
(starts to write down his phone number on a piece of paper) The surf cam
in Galveston is always down, but next time you want to know how the waves are
just give me a call and we'll go rip. (Hands phone number to David) David:
Thanks, man I'll definitely do that if you really don't mind. Jason:
No, not at all. My friends are always calling me about that. David:
(notices Enrique staring with a smirk on his face) Hey, what’s up? Enrique:
I'm sorry; I couldn't help but over hear you guys. Do you two really try to surf
in Texas? I didn't think that was even possible. (David
and Jason turn and look at each other with a smile) Jason:
(says sarcastically) No we just like to go out in the water with our
board that we paid three hundred or so for and swim around just for the hell of
it. David:
(laughs and looks over to Jason) Ye....ah, I know my favorite thing to do
is waste a bunch of money on crap that I can't use. Enrique:
(folds his arms across his chest) I was just asking. You don't have to be
jerks about it. I mean I just didn't think there were people who surfed in
Texas. Jason:
I was just joking, sorry man. David:
(Nodding his head) Yeah, we just hear that all the time. Enrique:
( Unfolds his arms) No, I probably came off a bit harsh, and I apologize
for that but I am curious because the few times I've been down to the beach the
surf looked more like a lake. David:
The surf can be flat but that’s true for any beach. Jason:
Besides you really can't tell how big the waves actually are, unless you've been
out there. David:
Yeah, Looking at waves from the beach can be pretty deceiving. Enrique:
I can understand all of that, but do you ever come across big waves?
David:
During hurricane season, we can get some waves that are double overhead. Jason:
Right on, but the rest of the year there is usually small surf with an
occasional big day. Enrique:
(a little confused) hmm. O-kay........ Hold on, so you guys go surfing
during hurricanes!? Jason:
Well yeah, that is the best time to go. Enrique:
(shaking his head) That’s crazy! David:
It's really not that bad. It’s just a bunch of rain and you’re going to get
wet anyways. Jason:
Besides we don't stay out there when the storm is making landfall. Usually, you
go out there a couple of days before the hurricane hits and right after it hits
or if the storms not coming real close to here there’s no worries at all. David:
Hey, if you really want to know what it’s all about, you’re more than
welcome to come the next time I go. Enrique:
(smiling) Thanks but I think there’s enough danger in my life right now
having a new wife. (Jason
and David both laugh) Instructor
(Dr. White): All right class, everyone take out your syllabus and turn to page
5. I want to go over the journal assignment. (Enrique,
Jason, and David start pulling out their folders and look for their syllabuses)
