(Enters Corrie, places her bags down on the desk in front of Jennifer and turns around.)

Corrie: I’m glad you’re here.  Tamrynn was looking for you at lunch, and I was worried, not about you...

(interrupting her)

Jennifer: Gee! Thanks, I appreciate that. (change tone from joking to inquisitive) Why? What’s up?

Corrie: Tamrynn is acting really strange today.  I asked her what was wrong, but she just asked if I had seen you.

(Jennifer makes a face of concern mixed with pity)

Corrie:  You already know something, don’t you?

Jennifer:  I might, but I hope I’m wrong.

(Enters: Tamrynn places her bags between Jennifer and Laurie. Corrie turns around to give them privacy, but leans back to listen.)

Tamrynn:  My assignment is late.

Jennifer:  How late is your assignment?

Tamrynn: Five days, no six, it’s Monday.

(Corrie turns around shocked.)

Corrie: You and Josh?!  I didn’t think ya’ll...(realizing her volume) Sorry. (pause) I didn’t think ya’ll were partners on any assignments. (uses her fingers to make quotations for “partner” and “assignments”).

Laurie: (sarcastically, to Corrie) Oh, nice save.

(Tamrynn does not respond.)

Jennifer:  Do you think you’re in trouble?

Tamrynn:  Oh, yeah.

Corrie: Does Josh know your assignment is late? (uses fingers for quotations.)

Tamrynn: Not a clue, and stop moving your hands; we know what you’re talking about.

Jennifer:  Are you making any progress? (very low whisper) cramps?

Corrie: (not quite a whisper) Morning sickness?

Laurie: (sarcastically, aside) Have you felt it kick?

(Robin enters and is walking to her seat)

Tamrynn: I got nothin’; not for or against.

Jennifer: I told you to stay away from that topic.  You’ll flunk the test, Tamrynn.

Corrie:  No, I bet it comes out positive.

Robin:  What topic?  If you need any help...

(Jennifer shakes her head “no.”)

(Robin looks down at her desk embarrassed.)

Tamrynn: Okay, bad topic, but what now?  My mom’s going to totally kick me out, and Josh doesn’t want this.  He leaves for Air Force in two months.  I can’t do this!

(A few people, turn to look at her.)

Jennifer: (calmly) Hold it together.  After school, come to my house and we’ll do some research.

Corrie: (as a warning) Teacher.

(the class turns and watches Mr. Andresakis shuffle papers around on his desk.  Corrie writes something to Jennifer.  Jennifer reads it hands it to Tamrynn.  Tamrynn writes on it and drops it handing it back to Corrie.  Mr. Andresakis picks it up and puts it in the trash.)

Mr. Andresakis:  Okay, today we start a new six weeks.  Our book this six weeks is, The Scarlet Letter.   What do ya’ll already know about the plot?

Tamrynn: (mumbles to herself) That’s what I will be wearing a big belly as my scarlet letter that will stand for a “baby” with a capital B.

Mr. Andresakis: I’m sorry Tamrynn, I didn’t hear you.  What was that?

Tamrynn: Nothing, I might be wrong.

(45 minutes later.)

David: (to group) What’s up with Josh’s girl?

Laquita:  Oh, let me tell you, she’s in a tight spot.  Her mom is threatening to kick her out if her grades don’t come up, and she is failing History because of a missed assignment.  Josh was her partner, but like, he didn’t help at all.  Now, he has to join the military, and she can’t walk with us at graduation.
