Lisa Anne Hacker Research Plan: An Indepth Look at the Contrasting Ideals of
Jamaica Kincaid and Derek Walcott My studies thus far in this course have developed a curiosity
about the authors Jamaica Kincaid and Derek Walcott. I have been particularly
interested in the differences of opinion that both appear to have embraced about
colonialism. As I mentioned in my midterm, I see Kincaid as being a staunch
critic of the process, while Walcott maintains a level of acceptance. Kincaid's
writings also maintain a consistent level of criticism, while Walcott's express
acknowledgement of both rejection and embracing of his colonizing country. I would like to further research their differences in a
research journal. I plan to analyze a sampling of their writing, preferably in
chronological order, to see if there is a progression in their attitude. I think
this will be easier to do with Walcott's poetry. Asides from analyzing the writings themselves, I would also
like to further research interviews with the authors and also critical analyses
of their work.
