Research Plan

          I think the relationship between Gauguin’s paintings and Jamaica Kincaid’s novel Lucy is fascinating.  I propose to do a research journal drawing connections between the texts and artists representative of the colonial and post-colonial period.  I have not narrowed down which texts from the course the journal will focus on.  I anticipate journal entries consisting of a textual reference alongside an artwork along with a brief discussion of the relationship between the two.

          The class discussion of primitivism as an artistic style revealed another avenue of looking at Kincaid’s work.  I am speculating that finding similar comparisons, of artwork and text, could produce interesting ground for discussion.

          I would appreciate your feedback, particularly if you have any suggestions of text/artist relationships.
