Student Midterm Research Plan 2009

Research Plan

For my research plan I choose to do the research project, but I am unsure if the essay or journal would better fit my proposed topic. I have not completely pieced my plan together, but I know I want my main focus to be on the Harlem Renaissance and the power of white privilege and racism created through colonization. I have not yet read Things Fall Apart, but I hope to find a link to my proposed topic in the novel, as well as in Lucy. I was also thinking of using Their Eyes Were Watching God if time allows.

I have always had a really strong interest in African and African-American art, music, literature, and culture especially the poetry, writing, dance and song of the Harlem Renaissance. Langston Hughes is one of my favorite authors and I hope to use some of his poetry as well as music from a few of the popular artists of the era.  It is vey interesting to me how so much power and emotion was revealed through the Harlem Renaissance and how racism and submissiveness due to white privilege and as I now know, colonization, created such an outpour of African-American creativity. I research more about the Harlem Renaissance and how colonizing might have affected or sparked it.
