V for Vendetta (2005)

Directed by: James McTeigue

Summary:

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante known only as "V." Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself - and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Primary Objectives:

  1. To identify, describe, and criticize stories humans tell about the future:
    1. Evolutionary – how the political cycles change
    2. Apocalyptic – end of the England, (controlled by the government) beginning of new England and new government

2.      To identify, describe, and criticize typical visions or scenarios of the future

a.      high tech; virtual reality—Totalitarian government is keeping all of the new technologies and developments for themselves to make their lives easier and better

b.     low tech; actual reality—since the people of England are controlled by the government, they do not even know about or see these new technologies; therefore they are bound to stay within the government control and rules

c.    utopia / dystopia / ecotopia—dysfunctional world

Questions:

1.      In the movie, the government calls V a terrorist. Do you think he really was a terrorist or a defender of the people of England? Why do you think so?

2.      As seen in the movie about V’s past, he was captured by the government and put in a prison and control center for medical research. (This is part of the reason why he wants revenge against the government.) How do you feel about using real humans for medical research and testing?

3.      Another motto by V: “Strength through unity. Unity through faith.”

In the movie the media projects the American society failure due to them being godless. Do you believe that this motto is correct and why? Can there be strength without faith? Also, how does this concept relate to Parable of the Sower?
