The Fifth Element

Director: Luc Besson

Primary Objectives:

1.  To identify, describe, and criticize the narratives or stories humans tell about the future.

·        Apocalyptic

2. To identify, describe, and criticize typical visions of the future (as seen from 2007).

·        Low tech / actual reality

Synopsis: The movie begins with a professor explaining that every 5000 years three planets eclipse and a “door” is opened.  This door provides an opportunity for evil to come through and to take over the world forever.  The fifth element (a perfect being) is the only thing that can destroy the evil and this being is protected by a group of people until it is needed.  When evil threatens the earth in the year 2214 Leeloo, the perfect being, must save the world with the help of Korbin Dallas, a former military officer.

Questions

1.     Zorg thinks that chaos and destruction contribute to life.  In Parable of Sower Lauren and the rest of the group had to resort to killing people so that they will live and be able to start a community.  Do you think that it is possible that destruction can contribute to life?

2.     Even though the world in this movie is technologically advanced human beings have not changed how they interact with each other. Leeloo tells Korbin that the world is not worth saving because all people do is hurt each other.  If we cannot change with the world around us, is there a point to preserving human life?
