Freejack: A Future of Immortality

* Film to Discuss: Freejack, written by Robert Sheckley, taken from his book

Immortality INC. Screen play was done by Ron Shusett, whose other works include Alien and Total Recall.

* Dimensions of the future: deep future; post millennial; an alternative future

other than death as we know it.

* Course Objectives:

Objective 1. The future is both apocalyptic and alternative. The setting in this film is apocalyptic. The rich have gotten richer and the poor have gotten poorer. The rich live in luxurious high rise buildings, while the poor live in dilapidated conditions such as were described in Stone Lives. This film is also alternative because of the many forks the future could take with this technology.

* Other Films: Total Recall, Back to the Future, Austin Powers, Time Cop

* Explanation of the Film: The beginning of the film takes place in 1990. Alex Furlong is a race car driver. Alex’s future wife Julie is also attending this race. During the race Alex loses control of his vehicle and is killed. In an alternate world existing in 2009 a unit is being dispatched to snatch Alex just before the exact time of his death. A rich businessman, McClandlis, is paying for Alex’s body. Alex escapes them and is cast into the future to survive alone. This practice is not uncommon in the future and these people like Alex are referred to as "Freejacks". He manages to locate Julie again and their love is rekindled. Together they manage to outwit the devious "Bone-Jackers" who are after his body.
