Weird Science- Artificial Intelligence

FILM TO DISCUSS:

*Weird Science. Directed by John Hughes.

ARC OR STATE OF THE FUTURE:

*evolutionary- advancement of computers. The more advanced the computers

become, the more interactive they are with humans.

DIMENSIONS OF THE FUTURE:

*near future

FILM CLIP:

*This is the scene where Gary and Wyatt create a woman from the computer.

They are loading the computer with all the data that they want this woman to

have.

ABOUT THE SUBJECT:

*The Artificial Intelligence Center is one of the world’s major centers of research

in artificial intelligence. Its objectives are to develop methods for building

computer-based systems to solve problems, to communicate with people, and

to perceive and interact with the physical world.

WHAT IS A PERSON?:

*This question must be answered before we can even begin to think about

whether it might be possible to build a person.

WHAT IS INTELLIGENCE BEHAVIOR?:

*learning

*problem solving/decision making

*reasoning and language ability

*creativity

*memory

*ability to generalize

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE:

*behavior of machine that if performed by a human, would be considered

intelligent

*study of how to make computers do things that at present people are better

AI vs. NATURAL INTELLIGENCE (NEGATIVES):

* NI creative, AI uninspired

*NI is conscious and perceptive, AI only symbolic

*NI (people) use wide area of context; AI requires (typically) a narrow domain

AI vs. NATURAL INTELLIGENCE (POSITIVES):

*AI permanent, NI perishable

*AI easy to duplicate

*AI less expensive

*AI consistent, thorough, never tires; people get tired

*AI documentable, NI not always

OTHER ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENT CREATIONS:

*Johnny 5- Short Circuit

*3CPO- Star Wars

*R2D2- Star Wars

*Data- Star Trek

QUESTION:

*Will artificial intelligence become the link to the most human advancement ever

or will they become self-aware and destroy us because they have become so

advanced? Will these advanced computers "persons" help in advancements

such as surgery, mathematics, engineering, construction, etc., or will they harm

the humans economically by taking jobs away?
