TRAGEDY

Research Report Proposals 2006

Carmen Ashby

I think I'd really like to do my research report on Lorraine Hansberry. I really enjoyed A Raisin in the Sun and would like to learn more about her.

Nathan Brown

I'd like to do a research report on the genre, or sub-genre, of detective fiction, and specifically focus on the detective novel.  I would like to research about famous fictional detectives.  I would like to start with Edgar Allan Poe's detective Auguste Dupin and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and go through to the present detectives like Lilian Jackson Braun's Jim Qwilleran and James Patterson's Alex Cross. I would also include amateur detectives like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.

Tragedy in Country Music

Initially, I had little idea as to what I wanted to research.  I began to listen and watch for any form of Tragedy which existed within my immediate lifestyle.  It is this exercise that led to a decision to research country music.  While not all country music fits the mold of Tragedy, I intend to find whether or not Tragedy is a reoccurring theme within the Country Music genre.  If so, I intend to listen to other genres of music and determine if Tragedy occurs in them as well.  Contemporary songs tend to be shorter works that keep the attention of students and help students understand the basis and foundation of a difficult subject prior to encountering greater works of literature.

Joanna Ellis

I will be researching the most commonly used phrases in categorizing the Musical/Movie RENT. I will also attempt to draw out the genres present.

Keely Flom

I am doing my genre presentation on fantasy genre and would like to use the same theme for my research report.

Iris Gilbert

I would like to do my research on Eugene O'Neill to find out more about his background.  I was introduced to O'Neill this past semester when reading A Moon For The Misbegotten and I really enjoyed this play.  In addition to writing about O'Neill's background, I want to attempt to write about the above play, specifically the ending.  In addition to the ending being definitely tragic, I also view it as romance and I would like to see if I can find research which collaborates this.

Topher Gregory

I'd like to do research on playwright Edward Albee to find out more about his background and what caused him to form his unique style of tragedy.  I was introduced to Albee a few years ago during a winter in which the Alley Theater was only playing his works. I saw Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and I must say, even then I checked out the Harold Bloom criticism on his works.  In short, since then, I find Albee fascinating.

As well as writing on how Albee derived his unique writing style from his background, I would like to dissect the genre mix that WAOVWoolf? (and maybe his other plays) falls under.  The bits of romance, the "tragi-comedy", I would like to find corresponding research for this.

Sarah Hardwick

I am very interested in tragic women in literature.  I would like to explore tragic women characters of women authors and tragic character women of men authors.  I want to explore the final fall of each tragic hero and the outcome of thus.  I am thinking of including the works of Ovid's Metamorphoses and Marsha Norman's 'Night, Mother.  Do you have any other suggestions on women authors of tragic women?

Cana Hauerland

I would like to research a little on Arthur Miller's background and playwriting history, mainly focusing on his one play Death of a Salesman.  Miller's writing is interesting to me because I feel he helped develop a new genre of tragedy, which is often percieved as modern.  Death of A Salesman portrays a tragic character who is lowly ranked in society.  Miller's other works often portray issues of today's society which is different from the classic tragedies that are often studied.

"Are Women in Literature Really As Innocent As They Appear?"

For my research I would like to look into what literary scholars have said about the subject and use the characters Gertrude from Hamlet, and Iokaste from Oedipus Rex to support my findings. I will include the works that describe the status of Women in Ancient Greece and in the 17th century, and use this information to show reasons for the possible actions of women as well as for the possible innocent portrayal of them in literature.

updated proposal:

After speaking with Dr. Mieskowski I have decided to narrow my report topic to simply "The portrayal of women in classic Greek literature." I plan to research what scholars have to say about the living conditions of women, as well as their social status during that time period. I plan to use this information to show reasons for the possible actions of women as well as for the possible innocent portrayal of Jokaste in contrast to the negative portrayal of Medea and Antigone in Greek literature.

Bryan Lestarjette

I would like to investigate the role of tragedy or tragic elements in today's pop culture, particularly film.

Comedy comes and goes!

After discussing the differences between having comedy in a tragedy I became interested in all the different aspects that made a tragedy more memorable when it was not a comedy. I plan to find evidence over this through past readings and films and the way that the story line stood out to me and affected people.  I hope to learn the different meanings behind what kind of genre becomes more memorable to people.

Annie McCormick-Vass

I'd like to do my research report on Thornton Wilder. I've only read one of his novels, but I really enjoyed his work. His play "Our Town" is required reading in some school districts and I'm thinking I might focus on just that one play.

Tara Orr

I would like to do my research project the element of eroticism in poetry. If time allows, I would like to look at its history.

Karen Ramirez

Women as Victims, Villains or Both in Greek Tragedy

For my research I would like to see what literary scholars have to say about the subject and use three characters from literature to support my findings. I would like to use the role of Gertrude from Hamlet, Antigone and Medea as examples from classic literature.

Sheila Rhodes

A Midsummer Night's Dream and the many Complexities of Love

Love is a very complex element that we all at some point or another have to deal with.  A Midsummer Night's Dream has always been of one of my favorite Shakespeare dramas.  It has all the humor and comical element to keep the audience's attention while trying to act out the many complexities of love.  We all have to admit, love sometimes can complicate things.

I will attempt to examine dream and how through dream and imagination love can become a very complex situation.

Larry Stanley

I'd like to do my research on Tennessee Williams. I've always liked his plays and would like to learn more about him and try to extend this knowledge to my classmates.

Tanya Stanley

Women Within Tragedy

I am interested in researching women within Tragedy.  Women teach society, express their voices both privately and publicly, and they are positive forces against evil.  I hope to learn the significance of women involved in the literary genre known as Tragedy.  I want to emphasize the importance of women within literature.

Almeta Stonum

I would like to explore further the genre of Fairytales in relationship to other cultures and intended purposes.  The questions discussed during my presentation opened up quite a few areas of interest.

Elena Trevino

Women’s role in tragedies

I would like to integrate different aspects of women’s tragedies from stories from Ovid Metamorphoses and Medea. I would like to describe the different aspects of women and how they can be considered a key element of tragedy. What emotions drive women to tragedies and is there something that just throws them off of the edge. I would like to explore recent stories that can tie into this category as well.

addendum:

I wanted to change my research paper to narrowing the topic down to  how women's roles in literature have progressed. For each time period of Greek Literature, Elizabethan Literature, 19th century Literature and 20th century Literature. For each time period I will gives examples of stories that fall in the category and how women's roles have evolved. My title will be  The Evolution of Women's roles in Literature.

I am thinking about doing my research report on "nursery rhymes".   I do not think that many of them were initially written for children and I am interested to discover the real meaning behind many of the rhymes I have read.  I would like to include not only "written" nursery rhymes, but also those that have been set to music.  My toddlers have a few CD's and many of those old nursery rhymes are very bizarre! Is this topic ok?
