The Love for a Byronic Hero
When
looking at a movie it is no shock that the leading lady tends to always fall in
love with the bad boy. In the musical
Grease, Sandy ends up with Danny, who is a total opposite of her. In
Fifty Shades of Grey, Ana also ends
up with the mysterious yet sexy Christian Grey. When looking at the Byronic hero
he gives of an “emotional, handsome appearance, brilliant but cynical and self-
destructive”. Therefore, why do we tend
to fall in love with the Byronic hero?
It is
hard to say but the Byronic hero “appeals to society by standing apart from
society.” This is a character that we tend to love, as well hate. We may look at
this character and question why does he end up with the girl when he is wrong
for her. In James Fenimore Cooper, The
Last of the Mohicans we can see Magua
as a Byronic hero. Magua can be
described as rebellious yet with passion, mysterious, and of course his
strength. The characteristic of mysterious, which almost all Byronic hero’s
poses, can be associated with the theme of gothic, because the Byronic hero
tends to be haunted by some secret sin or crime.
Another character I would categorize as a Byronic hero is Brom Bones from,
Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy
Hollow. Irving states, “He was
always ready for either a fight or a frolic; but had more mischief than ill-will
in his composition; and with all his overbearing roughness, there was a strong
dash of waggish good humor at bottom.”(27). This makes Brom seem rebellious and
passionate, ready for a fight. He is right away categorized as the bad boy in
the story, who ends up with the fair lady- Katrina Van Tassel.
To
conclude, the sexy, dark and mysterious main character will always win our
hearts. There is just a different air to them that makes girls swoon and fall in
love with them. I for one have always preferred the Byronic hero, the character
who you just can’t figure out, that you have to conduct a search party to
understand him. Therefore, the
Byronic hero will always be a favorite and a man that we dream about.
